It is the mission of Tungasuvvingat Inuit (TI) to provide Inuit-specific programs that contribute to the health and wellbeing of Inuit, and to encourage and support similar programs for Inuit across the country. With over 30 years of highly successful experience in crafting the design, development and delivery of a wide range of effective, client-centered services, TI continues to deliver quality programs and services that directly benefit our growing urban Inuit population.

TI is searching for a skilled and experienced candidate to effectively manage TI’s Education Programs. The incumbent will be a collaborative member of TI’s Education and Employment department and TI’s greater management team. The Manager, Education, will manage, develop, and support an Education Policy Team and a Post-Secondary Team. This position will have the opportunity to participate, advise, educate, and influence advisory/technical tables, working groups, internal stakeholders, and decision-makers at Provincial “learning ministries”.

TI’s Education Program serves to educate stakeholders at Provincial Learning Ministries towards a more knowledgeable approach to the design and framework for Inuit Education in Ontario.

Key responsibilities of the position include:

• Leads and coordinates projects involving the public sector, Ministry staff, TI staff, and other stakeholder groups

• Provides technical leadership through all phases of projects including project scope, timeframes, milestones and deliverables, planning, recommending staff resources, and coordinating and guiding the Policy Department

• Supports TI strategic and operational processes by coordinating new initiatives, as well as ongoing program operations, selecting and recommending funding mechanisms, funding allocation, overseeing implementation, and evaluating/monitoring results

• Contributes to processes to secure funds for operations, assesses risks, and determines mitigation strategies

• Helps to break down stigma and systemic barriers and provide support and guidance on culturally appropriate educational services and programs

• Develops and facilitate in-house cultural competency training for internal and external stakeholders

• Represents TI at Indigenous Education Councils and at speaking engagements

• Evaluates the effectiveness of current/proposed education policy and framework designs and identify research needs

• Produces reports, briefings, studies, policy papers and other materials to present options and recommendations for consideration

• Participates in the development of departmental and organizational strategic, operational and project plans

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have a thorough understanding of the socio-economic issues impacting Inuit education in the province. The candidate will have knowledge of Inuit traditional teachings (IQ) and carry themselves according to those teachings. They will also have familiarity of education agencies, programs, and supports for the Inuit community. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, financial management skills, information and project management skills and supervisory skills are necessary.

The ability to deliver presentations, coordinate meetings, events, and other engagement activities, prepare proposals, reports, and briefings, and use computers (Microsoft Office, e-mail, and Internet) are all requirements of the position.

Post-secondary education in a relevant field is required; must have three (3) years’ experience in school settings, with school boards and/or the Ministry of Education or in a policy advisory role or another relevant field and two (2) years’ experience managing staff or leading a team. A combination of related education and experience may be accepted. Fluency in English is required and the ability to communicate in Inuktitut is an asset.
