WINNIPEG _ One of the people trying to unseat Manitoba Premier Greg Selinger is promising free after-school tutoring.

Theresa Oswald is also promising to double funding for school breakfast programs, provide more help to aboriginal head start initiatives and hire new teachers to reduce class sizes.

Oswald says her plan would cost $5 million annually, and another $25 million a year would be needed to continue the government’s plan to raise funding for schools.

Oswald has already made other spending promises and said she would pay for them, in part, by pushing back the province’s plan to balance the budget by next year.

Oswald was part of a caucus coup against Selinger that prompted the NDP to call a leadership contest for March 8.

Selinger is running to keep his job and former infrastructure minister Steve Ashton is also a candidate.
