SYDNEY — Discussions on an aboriginal seat on the board of directors for the new Port of Sydney Corp. is just one of many issues under consultation between First Nations and officials at the municipal and federal levels, says Membertou Chief Terry Paul.
Cape Breton Regional Municipality council approved several measures at a meeting earlier this week that would see an interim board consisting of regional councillors put in place to oversee the transition to a permanent Port of Sydney Corp. board in 2016.
Paul said he would very much like to see First Nations concerns represented at the board level of the new port corporation.
“I feel it’s quite important. We need to be part of the development of the port. It’s a lot better when you’re at the board table having these discussions,” he said in an interview Thursday.
