Modern treaty commissioner legislation moves to committee after passing second reading – APTN News

Indigenous leaders were in Ottawa on Monday to call on all parties to pass Bill C-10 – an act that would create a federal modern treaty commissioner.

“Rather than creating more bureaucratic delays by having a patchwork of policies, a modern day treaty commissioner would be an independent agent of parliament,” Huu-ay-aht First Nations Chief Councillor John Jack said at a press conference. “C-10 offers a path forward for Canada by ensuring that modern treaties are implemented as they were intended.”

According to the government, modern treaties “and other constructive arrangements create stability and predictability over rights, lands and interests.”
