Momentum builds for Kivalliq Hydro-Fibre Link with mention in Budget 2024

Press Release

The Kivalliq Hydro-Fibre Link (KHFL) was mentioned in Federal Budget 2024, marking the third time the project has been recognized in the Federal budget. This highlights the critical role the KHFL will play in bringing clean electricity and fibre optic internet to the Kivalliq region of Nunavut.

The KFHL was the only Northern energy project recognized in Budget 2024, signifying the ongoing support and confidence, for this nation-building project that will connect Nunavut to the rest of the country for the first time.

“Recognition of the KFHL in the Budget 2024 is a testament to the momentum this project continues to build, particularly as the Budget notes the importance of asserting Arctic sovereignty,” commented Anne-Raphaëlle Audouin, Chief Executive Officer of Nukik. “Closing the infrastructure gaps that exist in Canada’s North has never been more important to the vitality of our country, and our determination to advance the KFHL remains unwavering.”

While specific new funding allocations were not highlighted in the Budget, important next steps are underway, identifying mechanisms and opportunities for the project to receive additional government funding and support.

Nukik will continue to work with government partners to advance the KHFL as a project fully aligned to their objectives of economic reconciliation, Arctic sovereignty, and bringing critical infrastructure to Indigenous, Northern, and remote communities.
