Moose Cree FN: Ribbon Cutting Ceremony Celebrates Opening of Post Majority Home in Timmins

Press Release

November 13, 2025

November 13, 2025 marks the one-year anniversary of Moose Cree First Nation’s Child & Family Well-Being laws being passed by membership. Today, Chief and Council reconnected with Agnico Eagle in Timmins for a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of a home on Laforest Road, thanks in part to a generous donation from Agnico Eagle to Moose Cree First Nation’s Child and Family Well-Being Program.

This home will be used for the post majority age group that are attending college, university, or in a trade with any mines or organizations. This home, and the grounds that surround it, will be utilized to fill a gap for our young adults and their well-being. It offers a system to support these young adults while they are pursuing their careers.

This home was attained by the Child and family Well-Being Team and C.Nootchtai Technical Services with the support of Moose Cree First Nation’s Chief and Council and Child & Family Well-Being Committee, and officially moves over to Moose Cree First Nation with this ribbon cutting ceremony. Any of our youth who fell through the gaps may find new opportunities as we move forward with this arm of the project.

We have the backing of the Federal Government and are in negotiation meetings with Canada and Ontario for a long-term agreement. We are working on valuable projects within our nation for the future of our children. And as we continue to build our organization, we commit to providing regular updates to you, our membership. We encourage you to attend any upcoming information sessions for the latest updates.

Thank You,

Chief Peter Wesley
Moose Cree First Nation

Jennifer Carey-Cool,
Director of Child and Family Well-Being

Background

On November the 13th, 2024 Moose Cree First Nation’s membership voted publicly to assert their own jurisdiction on Child Welfare Reform. Our membership ratified the passing Moose Cree First Nation’s two laws, Môso Sîpîwililiwak Peyakôtesiwi Walašowewin, and Kâ Kišewâtisîcik Walašowewin, taking full jurisdiction of their children and families. This means that our First Nation’s laws will override the provincial Child Welfare Legislation once our Chief and Council bring our Laws into force.

During the process of working on our laws, Moose Cree First Nation’s Child and family Well-being had to build an organization and house for our laws. This department has been building and growing since 2022. We are also known as the Band Representatives. Our main objective will be to work with our families that are involved with the Child Welfare System, children that are in care, and family access. This has been ongoing for some time where we have been working very closely with our members within the agencies across Canada. There has been a lot of progress and work going on where our program are ensuring that confidentiality and the movement of our children are at the forefront.
