Nickel Belt MPP France Gelinas is calling on Ontario Environment and Climate Change Minister Glen Murray to exercise the broad powers the province has under the Environmental Protection Act to help Gogama residents after Saturday’s CN rail derailment.
The New Democrat MPP and a colleague, NDP Environment critic Peter Tabuns, held a news conference Tuesday at Queen’s Park asking Murray to issue orders to CN and initiate claims for compensation for individuals while the derailment is being investigated.
Thirty-eight cars of a 92-car CN train derailed Saturday about 2:30 a.m. near Gogama. Two cars plunged into the Mattagami River, and some cars exploded and caught fire near the village of about 400 people, an hour south of Timmins.
Gelinas said she received the first phone call from a panicked Gogama resident about 8:15 a.m. Saturday. When the phone kept ringing after that, she and Nickel Belt New Democrat MP Claude Gravelle travelled to Gogama to view the scene for themselves.
