NDP wants polling stations brought to remote First Nation community – The Chronicle Journal

Citing increased voter participation, the federal New Democrats wants Elections Canada to set up a polling stations on Windigo Island in the Kenora riding.

Kenora NDP candidate Howard Hampton has sent a letter to Elections Canada adding his support to those requesting a polling station within the lake community of the Northwest Angle #37 First Nation.

Northwest Angle #37 First Nation consists of two main communities: Regina Bay, the main community and mainland community near Sioux Narrows, and Windigo Island near the Ontario/United States border, accessible by boat and ice road during winter months.

“It is clearly within Elections Canada’s mandate to encourage vote participation in both isolated and aboriginal communities,” Hampton said on Tuesday. “A polling station on Windigo Island would accomplish that priority.”
