The land is being added to the nation’s reserve land base, which is the lowest per capita in the province.
The federal government has returned nearly 80 hectares of land to the Snuneymuxw First Nation, which it hopes to develop with housing and commercial spaces.
The land transfer, announced Thursday, involves three federal parcels of land in the City of Nanaimo, often referred to as the Department of National Defence lands, according to a joint statement by Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada and the Snuneymuxw First Nation.
The lands are part of Snuneymuxw’s te’tuxwtun site at the base of Mount Benson, the site of the nation’s origin story, said Chief Mike Wyse.
