NorthMart Iqaluit Store Damaged by Fire

Press Release

Winnipeg, MB, November 8, 2018 – The North West Company announced that an early morning fire in the Iqaluit, NU NorthMart caused a total loss to warehouse facilities and major damage to the store service and sales areas. All staff working in the building were safely evacuated and action plans are underway to ensure that essential community services provided by the store are restored as soon as possible.

“We are in the process of assessing the full extent of the damage to determine if we are able to utilize a portion of the facility in the near-term. We are also working to immediately repurpose one or more other buildings in Iqaluit, in addition to our four convenience stores, to be able to serve our customers and will work closely with the Arctic Ventures store to ensure that they have the food quantities needed to meet the communities needs in the interim,” commented Canadian Retail President Alex Yeo, who is currently on site in Iqaluit. “We are grateful for and appreciate all of the support we are receiving from within and outside the community as we work diligently to address this major loss of service.” added Yeo. The damage to the facilities and business interruption losses are expected to be covered by insurance.
