Students, employers acknowledged with Canadian Skills and Trades week
Growing up, Amy Ward always enjoyed building go-karts and tinkering around in the garage with her grandfather. When it came time to pick a career, Ward wanted to stick with something she knew and loved so she decided to become a mechanic and, after some time in the field, a parts technician.
Circumstances brought her north from her home in Alberta, where she joined the ranks of 2,600 apprentices trained in the Northwest Territories since apprenticeship programs were first introduced in 1964.
Last week, the GNWT celebrated the 50th anniversary of apprenticeship programs in the territory during national Trades and Technology Week. Over Nov. 3 to 7, 75 current apprentices with the top marks in the territory were handed awards of recognition for their hard work. Ward, who did her apprenticeship with TDC Contracting in Fort Smith, was one of those students.
