OPINION: Before candidates try to convince Indigenous people to vote for them, they need to acknowledge that their parties are part of the problem

The two primary governing parties in Ontario — the Liberals and Progressive Conservatives — have not done right by Indigenous peoples. The two are responsible for decades of non-engagement with First Nations. Apart from a tiny orange blip when Bob Rae’s NDP formally recognized First Nations as distinct nations with inherent rights, the transfer of power between the red and blue parties has increasingly focused on corporate interests and treated Indigenous peoples as an afterthought — if not with outright disdain. The choice between the “red pill” or the “blue pill” has not resulted in significant advancements for Indigenous peoples in the matrix of Ontario politics.
