Samson Cree Nation Announces First Nations Trade Sovereignty Conference – June 9 & 10, 2025

Samson Cree Nation, Treaty Six Territory – Samson Cree Nation is proud to announce the upcoming First Nations Trade Sovereignty Conference, taking place on June 9 & 10, 2025 at the River Cree Resort and Casino, in Enoch Cree Nation. This national gathering will bring Nations from across Turtle Island to engage in meaningful and strategic dialogue, knowledge sharing and collaboration in support of Indigenous trade, economic sovereignty, and Nation to Nation partnerships.
“This conference is grounded in our Inherent Rights to self-determination,” said Samson Cree Nation Chief Vernon Saddleback. “It represents a powerful opportunity for First Nations to define and advance trade frameworks on our own terms – rooted in our culture, values and relationships.”
Conference Objectives and Highlights:
- Advance culturally grounded trade and infrastructure initiatives that reflect our economic, environment and community values;
- Define the principles of meaningful consultation and engagement, particularly when working with various levels of government and Industry – ensuring that trade priorities and equitable economic partnerships are built on respect, equity and the recognition of First Nations rights and jurisdiction;
- Explore trade opportunities in key sectors such as energy, forestry, and agriculture, with a focus on building international trade relationships in collaboration with allied nations;
- Explore pathways for inter-Nation trade frameworks rooted in traditional knowledge, community-led development, and enduring trust among Nations.
While the Samson Cree Nation is leading the organization of this conference, the direction and content are guided by a collective vision—one that centers the voices, values, and interests of all First Nations. Chiefs and designated representatives are encouraged to attend and lend their voices to these critical conversations

While this conference is not sponsored by the government or industry, there will be a trade fair where representatives from those sectors may be present. However, all core discussions and working sessions will remain exclusive to First Nation attendees, ensuring a space grounded in our priorities, perspectives and Nation to Nation dialogue.
