Press Release
October 3, 2025
Premier Mike Pemberton has issued the following statement:
“Last week, many Yukoners may have noticed more people in Navy uniforms around town. That’s because the Royal Canadian Navy hosted a community event over the weekend, giving Yukoners the chance to learn about the Navy and experience firsthand what the Naval Reserve has to offer.
“Since announcing the feasibility study of a Naval Reserve unit in the Yukon, the Royal Canadian Navy has been actively assessing the potential for a unit in Whitehorse. They have been engaging with Yukon communities, consulting Yukon First Nations and gathering insights to support this work. In the coming months, they will expand their consultations to communities throughout the Yukon.
“During their time here, I had an opportunity to meet with Rear-Admiral Michael Hopper, Chief of Reserves and Western Region Commander Captain (N) Lucas Kenward, senior leaders of the Naval Reserve and members of the Western Regional Command Team for an update on the feasibility work to date.
“I am excited for the future opportunities a Naval Reserve unit could create for all Yukoners, especially for youth. I look forward to further collaboration with the Government of Canada, Royal Canadian Navy and Yukon First Nations to make a Naval Reserve unit a reality.
“Thank you, Rear Admiral Hopper, Captain (N) Kenward and all those from the Royal Canadian Navy who visited Whitehorse to share their experiences with Yukoners. And a special thanks to Royal Canadian Navy Whitehorse representatives Lieutenant-Commander Eric Salter and Chief Petty Officer 2nd Class Harry Godwin for their community engagement on this important initiative.”
