Ekati environmental monitoring board directors removed
The three directors removed from the environmental watchdog for the Ekati mine last week could be just the start of a larger overhaul of the diamond mining oversight process in the Northwest Territories, according to the GNWT.
Three of the longest-serving representatives on the Independent Environmental Monitoring Agency (IEMA) were let go last Tuesday, eliminating 33 years of cumulative experience on the board.
Chair Bill Ross, who has been with the agency since its inception in 1997, groundwater expert Laura Johnston and wildlife biologist Kim Poole were handed letters of dismissal last Tuesday as the GNWT, federal government and Dominion Diamonds Corp. decided to make room for three former GNWT employees on the board.
