The Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak is fracturing over what critics of Grand Chief David Harper are calling a “major breach of trust.”
Swampy Cree Tribal Council says they are leaving the MKO because Harper struck an agreement with the Nuclear Waste Management Organization. A joint statement from the seven members of SWTC says Harper struck the agreement last week in contravention of an MKO resolution banning the storage of nuclear waste in Manitoba.
SCTC member nations are Sapotaweyak Cree Nation, Chemawawin Cree Nation, Mathias Colomb Cree Nation, Misipawistik Cree Nation, Marcel Colomb Cree Nation, Wuskwi Sipihk First Nation and Mosakahikan Cree Nation.
Chief Arlen Dumas of the Mathias Colomb Cree Nation says in a release today that the MKO Grand Chief had “no legal, political or moral authority” to make the agreement with the Nuclear Waste Management Organization.
