Payroll employment, earnings and hours, and job vacancies, April 2025
The number of employees receiving pay and benefits from their employer—measured as “payroll employment” in the Survey of Employment, Payrolls and Hours—was little changed in April (-6,200), following two consecutive declines in February and March.
National tourism indicators, first quarter 2025
Tourism spending was virtually unchanged in the first quarter of 2025 after increasing 1.5% in the fourth quarter of 2024. Tourism spending by foreigners was down (-2.6%) in the first quarter of 2025, while domestic tourism spending was up 0.8%.
Aircraft movement and civil aviation statistics, April 2025
Major Canadian airlines flew 7.0 million passengers on scheduled and charter services in April, unchanged from April 2024.
Monthly estimates of business openings and closures, March 2025
In March, the business opening rate was 4.8% for a third straight month. The closure rate edged up 0.1 percentage points to 4.8%, following two consecutive monthly declines of 0.2 percentage points. In March, the business opening rate was 0.1 percentage point above its 2015-to-2019 historical average while the closure rate was 0.2 percentage points higher than its historical average.
Food services and drinking places, April 2025
Total sales in the food services and drinking places subsector increased 1.0% in April to $8.5 billion.
Qualitative analysis of substances in the wastewater of Canadian cities, January to December 2023
New data indicating the presence of various new and emerging psychoactive substances in wastewater samples from the 2023 Canadian Wastewater Survey are now included in the updated dashboard titled “Canadian Drug and Substance Watch,” published by Health Canada.
Production and disposition of tobacco products, May 2025
Canadian manufacturers produced 972 million cigarettes in May 2025, down 21.1% from April 2025. Cigarette production was 18.7% lower compared with May 2024.
Wholesale trade: Early indicator, May 2025
Statistics Canada is providing an advance estimate of sales in the wholesale trade sector for May. The advance results for May indicate that wholesale sales (excluding petroleum, petroleum products, and other hydrocarbons and excluding oilseed and grain) decreased 0.4%. The decline reflects lower sales in the machinery, equipment and supplies subsector.
