Waterfront Steering Committee presents report to city – Fort McMurray Today

February 16, 2015

After six months and two delays, the Waterfront Steering Committee got to deliver its report on how to protect and preserve downtown land along the Snye and Clearwater River.

The committee, which was created by Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo council in 2014 and made up of 12 stakeholders including commercial, aboriginal peoples, cultural and heritage interests, delivered its report, including 52 recommendations. Council voted to accept the report as information and refer it to administration for analysis on how it could be implemented.

“I think they have done a very thorough analysis of all kinds of issues and opportunities,” said Mayor Melissa Blake. “I was a little worried that it would be an all-nighter, but frankly the details that they were able to highlight were of great use to council.”

The report recommends that road access and flood abatement be pushed back from the current Morimoto Drive area, expanding the amount of parkland adjacent to the Snye.
