Organized opposition of Ontarians and Indigenous Peoples to Bill 5, the Protect Ontario by Unleashing our Economy Act, 2025, continues to intensify. This omnibus law was pushed through the Ontario Legislature in 10 days, passing on June 4 and receiving Royal Assent on June 5.
Bill 5 is aimed at accelerating the delivery of critical minerals, energy and infrastructure projects across Ontario under the pretext of fighting the Trump tariffs. The law amends eight existing laws, including the Mining Act; the Electricity Act, 1998; the Ontario Energy Board Act, 1998; and the Rebuilding Ontario Place Act, 2023. It also enacts two new laws.
