Action needed following Truth and Reconciliation Report – BCGEU

Last week saw the long-awaited report from Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), which chronicles the injustices faced by Aboriginal children attending residential schools in decades past. It’s a tragic chapter in our nation’s history, one that has devastated former students, their families and communities.

I’d like to acknowledge the work of the commission in compiling this historic report and call on Canadians to embrace its findings and recommendations.

Action must be taken to ensure no more Aboriginal children suffer the inter-generational effects of this dreadful past. The report’s recommendations point the way toward a positive future. The scope of the task, while somewhat daunting, shouldn’t be used as an excuse for delay.

The BCGEU represents Aboriginal workers in a variety of occupational groups – professionals with firsthand knowledge of the issues that need addressing. We would encourage all levels of government to move forward on the following:
