NORTHUMBERLAND – Offering an overview to county politicians of a new duty-to-consult protocol created by Alderville First Nation, band member Dave Simpson included a desire that member municipalities and Alderville “work together” in the future.
“Our doors are open” for discussion about any project, development, or anything that impinges on the reserve or territorial lands, water or air, county councillors were told.
It is essential to consult on “anything going on in our territory,” Simpson stressed at this week’s meeting of Northumberland County Council.
The new protocol was created over a long period of time following the Supreme Court decision in British Columbia in 2004 that laid out the duty to consult “prior to” decisions, actions or impacts on the rights and interests of Aboriginal Peoples, Simpson said.
