Yellowknives Dene First Nation claim measures to limit development not implemented in region

A fight to protect Great Slave Lake’s Drybones Bay by the Yellowknives Dene First Nation is now in the hands of a Federal Court of Appeal judge.

Two years ago, a federal court decision ruled the Mackenzie Valley Environmental Review Board was right to approve the application of Alex Debogorski — of Ice Road Truckers fame — to drill up to ten exploration holes in the area, about 50 kilometres southeast of Yellowknife.

Debogorski is searching for diamonds on a mineral claim that’s 90 per cent under Great Slave Lake. Almost all of the drilling would take place under the lake bed or on a piece of land called Burnt Island. No archaeological sites have been found there.
