Bloc MPs call on Ottawa to compensate Quebec taxpayers for final round of carbon rebates – iPolitics

For the second day in a row, MPs are set to debate — and, eventually, vote on — a motion put forward by the opposition — this time, courtesy of the Bloc Québécois, which will use its first — and, most likely, only — allotted day of the spring supply cycle to make the case for why the federal government should hand over $814 million to Quebec “without conditions” to compensate those taxpayers for the estimated $3.7 billion spent on the final round of Canada Carbon Rebates, which “was paid for with government funds, and therefore by all taxpayers, including those from Quebec,” despite the fact that Quebec residents were not eligible to receive those payments. (10 a.m.)

Shortly after the debate gets underway, Bloc Québécois MP Christine Normandin will hit the House of Commons Foyer to brief reporters on the motion — which, as was the case with yesterday’s bid by the Conservatives to pressure the government to deliver a budget before the House rises for the summer, would not be binding on the government, with both motions on deck to go to a vote tonight.
