Agreement promises new era of relations between town and First Nation
The leader of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation (MCFN) and the mayor of Caledon came together on Friday, Oct. 28 at the Caledon Centre for Recreation and Wellness to sign a historic agreement between the two communities.
Chief Stacey LaForme and outgoing Mayor Allan Thompson signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), exchanged gifts, gave speeches and held up a blue and white wampum belt emblazoned with the number 200 as part of the historic agreement.
“That’s part of the Treaty,” said Thompson. ”Keeping the relationship open and working together. We are going to be taking on a lot of development and growth, but we also need to show respect to them on what we’re doing.”
