Chief, council seek NAN recognition – The Chronicle Journal

April 9, 2015

More than 40 members of the Hornepayne First Nation held a demonstration at the Nishnawbe Aski Nation office demanding answers to why the current elected chief and council are not being recognized by NAN.

“We’re here today because the community held it’s election on July 10, 2014 for its chief and council and at that time we provided the electoral results or certified reports to Chiefs of Ontario Assembly of First Nation and Nishnawbe Aski Nation,” said Ron Kocsis who claimed to be the elected chief of Hornepayne First Nation during Wednesday’s protest.

“And the Nishnawbe Aski Nation . . . has refused to acknowledge those electoral reports to recognize the chief and council.”
“The disgruntled past leadership has made claims that they are still leadership.”

The Nishnawbe Aski Nation has to recognize the electoral reports as they are provided and if there are any challenges within the process it is done at the community level, explained Kocsis.
