The chiefs of the two Peterborough area First Nations were both pleased to see billions of dollars in the federal budget to help aboriginals – especially the money meant to provide clean drinking water to reserves.
The federal budget tabled on Tuesday calls for $8.4 billion spent over the next five years on issues such as education, child and family services and reserve water.
The budget also includes nearly $2 billion for water and wastewater infrastructure to provide clean water to reserves.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said he aims to end boil-water advisories on reserves within five years.
“It’s about time,” said Chief Phyllis Williams of Curve Lake First Nation. “That was music to my ears.”
