Government finance statistics, first quarter 2026
In the first quarter of 2026, the Canadian general government recorded a deficit of $16.4 billion, an increase of $1.5 billion compared with the same quarter a year earlier, as expenses grew (+0.4%) and revenue decreased slightly (-0.1%). Excluding social security funds, the deficit stood at $34.1 billion in the first quarter of 2026, almost unchanged from the $34.0 billion deficit recorded in the first quarter of 2025.

In April, the volume of cargo carried by Canadian railways edged up (+0.6%) from April 2025 to 33.0 million tonnes.
Screened passenger traffic at Canadian airports, May 2026
In May, 4.9 million passengers passed through pre-board security screening at checkpoints operated at Canada’s eight largest airports, up 3.3% from May 2025.
Survey of Commercial and Institutional Energy Use: Hospital and postsecondary campuses, 2024
In the context of a changing climate, adaptation measures are becoming increasingly important in Canada. Energy efficiency strategies are intended to mitigate the impacts of climate change, including the Canada Green Buildings Strategy, which is designed to achieve net-zero emissions for buildings by 2050 through building construction codes and energy-saving incentives. The 2024 Survey of Commercial and Institutional Energy Use, specifically the hospital and postsecondary campus component, provides data on the energy demand and consumption of these campuses across all 10 provinces.
Wholesale trade: Advance indicator, May 2026
Statistics Canada is providing an advance estimate of sales in the wholesale trade sector. The advance results for May indicate that wholesale sales (excluding petroleum, petroleum products, and other hydrocarbons and excluding oilseed and grain) fell 0.7%. The decrease partly reflects lower sales in the machinery, equipment and supplies subsector.

Preliminary data on hours worked and labour productivity in the provinces and territories for 2025 are now available. This release is aligned with the data on gross domestic product (GDP) by industry for the provinces and territories released on May 1, 2026.
