The Shawanaga First Nation is poised to accept a settlement that would pave the way for four-laning of Highway 69 through the community.
On Saturday, band members voted on a deal to compensate the First Nation for lands the province acquired in the mid-1930s to build a secondary highway on the reserve.
Of the 104 members who voted in the referendum, 59 (57%) were in favour of the $4-million settlement.
Most of that payout, more than $3.8 million, represents the province’s use of the land over the past 80 years, while $120,000 reflects the current value of the property (about 30 acres) spanned by Highway 7182, also called Shebeshekong Road.
