MILLBROOK – First Nations bands across the country now will have the option of extending their electoral terms from two to four years under new legislation announced yesterday in Millbrook.
Called the First Nations Elections Act, the legislation also introduces other changes to the electoral system aimed at both streamlining and making the process more transparent.
“First Nations will have the choice of opting into the new system that will help create more accountability and political stability by providing advantages such as a more robust nomination process and a longer term in office,” Bernard Valcourt, minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development, said Friday morning to an audience of Atlantic First Nations chiefs and other representatives, at the Millbrook Community Hall.
