First Nations Say PlayAlberta Is Unregulated – GamingPost.ca

First launched in the fall of 2020, provincial online gambling platform PlayAlberta.ca caters to the needs of Alberta’s gaming enthusiasts. Two First Nations are now dragging the provincial government as well as gaming regulator the Alberta Gaming, Liquor, and Cannabis Commission to court.

According to Southern Alberta First Nations Stoney Nakoda and Tsuut’ina, the platform is not only illegal and unregulated, but also a ploy on the part of government to collect for itself the revenue that had previously been generated in favour of local communities and social projects by land-based casinos. The First Nations seem to be of the opinion that the ongoing casino closures is government’s way of ensuring that gaming revenue continues to be channeled to its own coffers via PlayAlberta.ca.
