Government Needs to Do More to Implement Agreed-Upon Recommendations: Auditor General

Press Release

(TORONTO) Ontario’s Auditor General says the average full implementation rate of all the agreed-upon rec-ommendations published in her 2013 to 2018 Annual Reports was 62% in 2020 (59% for the 2012–2017 rec-ommendations). The update was provided in Bonnie Lysyk’s 2020 Annual Report, which was released today.

The Report also noted that 61% of recommendations issued by the Standing Committee on Public Accounts between March 2015 and March 2019 were fully implemented.

The audit process seeks input and agreement on recommendations from senior management in the organiza-tions audited before the reports are finalized.

“After the reports are tabled in the Ontario Legislature, we operate with the understanding that those respon-sible will take the necessary actions to make the improvements they committed to making within a reason-able period of time,” Lysyk said.

Some organizations—such as hospitals; psychiatric hospitals; the Ministry of Energy, Northern Development and Mines; Metrolinx; Ontario Power Generation; the Financial Services Regulatory Authority of Ontario; the Ontario Energy Board; and the Independent Electricity System Operator—had a high full implementation rate.

Others—such as the Ministry of the Solicitor General; the Ministry of Health; the Ministry of the Environ-ment, Conservation and Parks; and Children’s Aid Societies—have much lower full implementation rates.

“Implementation of these recommendations is important to drive positive improvements in the delivery of programs and services for Ontarians,” Lysyk said.
