More than a hundred people from the Nutashkuan Innu community have erected a barricade Wednesday on the road leading to the site of the La Romaine hydroelectric complex, near Havre-Saint-Pierre on Quebec’s North Shore.
Route 138 remains open, since the barricade is only blocking the access road to the site.
The Sûreté du Québec is on site, but has not intervened.
Chief Rodrigue Wapistan told La Presse Canadienne that the road would remain closed until Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard comes to meet him at Havre-Saint-Pierre to discuss the grievances of the Nutashkuan community, which include that Hydro-Québec is violating their rights and plundering the environment.
“Mr. Couillard must come here himself, to Havre-Saint-Pierre, on the site with me. We need to have a good discussion. I will not go to Montreal or Quebec,” he said.
