Just three days after formally presenting MPs with their proposal to strike a special joint committee to review Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s precedent-setting decision to invoke the never-before-used Emergencies Act in response to then-ongoing blockades and protests against COVID mandates across Canada, the minority Liberals are shutting down the ensuing debate, courtesy of a closure motion that will force a final vote on the matter later today.
On Monday, Government House leader Mark Holland said his government prefers that the committee comprise seven MPs, four senators, and three co-chairs: one from the New Democrats, one from the Bloc Québécois, and one nominated by the upper house. According to the Emergencies Act, the committee is required to review “the exercise of power and the performance of duties and functions” under the now-revoked emergency order.
