The Osoyoos Indian Band Chief says First Nations in the Thunder Bay region shouldn’t be experiencing unemployment rates worse than those seen during the Great Depression.
Chief Clarence Louie, who is from British Columbia, was the keynote speaker during the first Aboriginal Partnership Exchange event, which was held at the Victoria Inn on Thursday. During his presentation, Louie told the crowd of more than 300 people that the best relationship between Aboriginal Peoples and Canada was when it was a business relationship.
He said nowadays that relationship has changed to one of dependency, although there are some First Nations that have good business relationships, which to him is the original treaty relationship.
He said unemployment is rampant in many First Nation communities and has lead to many social problems. He explained that the First Nation unemployment rate is far higher than what was seen during the Depression.
