Living wage a Canadian first for Vancouver Island’s Huu-ay-aht First Nation – The Province

Kristen Young has always worked hard.

Out of school, her first job was tending an oyster lease for the Huu-ay-aht First Nation near Port Alberni. Several years later, the 29-year-old mother of three now works full time as a health and social development coordinator for the community.

But she admits her paycheques don’t always go as far as she’d like.

“With kids, it seems the money goes out as fast as it comes in,” she said.
