MIDDLE RIVER — The salmon population in Middle River is low and at present is not meeting conservation requirements.
As a result, the Unama’ki Institute of Natural Resources is asking First Nations communities in Cape Breton to stop taking salmon from Middle River for food or ceremonial purposes.
“We are asking for people’s co-operation in allowing the salmon population to return to healthier levels,” said Unama’ki Institute executive director Lisa Young.
Fisheries and Oceans Canada is responsible for salmon management, with participation from Mi’kmaq.
