Press Release
October 7, 2025
The Manitoba government will convene today with business and labour members of the U.S. Trade Council, the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs and the Manitoba Métis Federation to discuss the province’s priorities in the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) review and ensure Canada is fighting for Manitoba’s interests, Premier Wab Kinew announced today.
“Manitobans understand that when it comes to trade, we’re all on Team Canada,” said Kinew. “We need to stand together as we push back against Trump’s tariffs and make sure our producers, workers, and local businesses are heard. Our government is focused on building up this country and strengthening our economy for the long term.”
The council will provide input on CUSMA consultations and explore a business-to-business advocacy strategy targeted at U.S. trading partners, the premier noted.
The premier also highlighted Manitoba’s new economic development strategy, which includes a $50-million loan program to help local companies finance productivity-enhancing investments such as new equipment, technology and facility upgrades. The strategy also removes provincial sales tax on manufacturing upgrades to protect Manitoba’s manufacturing industry from tariffs.
“We’re building the relationships that will help Manitoba navigate whatever comes next,” said Richard Madan, Manitoba’s U.S. trade representative. “This is about advancing our interests and making sure our businesses, producers, and workers aren’t left on the sidelines when trade rules shift.”
