— Kyiv is under attack: Russian troops are reaching Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv. At publication time, some Russian soldiers had reported reached a northern suburb, and gunfire has been reported in the city. Ukraine had previously bombed three bridges to prevent tanks from accessing the city.
Russian President Vladimir Putin openly brandished the threat of nuclear war yesterday, warning in a speech that “Russia remains one of the most powerful nuclear states.” In another worrying development, Russian forces have taken control of Chornobyl nuclear plant, where radioactivity is still leaking from the nuclear disaster there. Russia also said it would close shipping in the Azov Sea, one of Ukraine’s two access points to sea trade.
