New chief hopes to end Native Council’s divided membership – The Guardian

The newly elected chief of the P.E.I. Native Council is hoping to end a divided membership and build the organization back up again.

Lisa Cooper was elected president and chief during a special assembly held at Hillsborough Community Centre on Saturday.

Cooper said the past few months have been a ‘trying time’ for the native council, which represents about 4,000 aboriginal people residing off-reserve on P.E.I.

“But now we can move forward and start building the organization back up,” said Cooper. “People are ready for change, and I am excited for the future of the Native Council.”
