Following a senate committee report on housing and infrastructure needs in First Nation communities, Nishnawbe Aski Nation is coming up with its own solution to the housing problem.
The Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples released a number of key recommendations in a two-phase study that began in 2013 last week including removing the two per cent cap on annual funding increases for community programs and creating a new ministerial loan guarantee program to help pay for infrastructure in remote First Nation communities.
The goal is to try to address the housing crisis many First Nation communities face.
NAN Deputy Grand Chief Les Louttit has called on the federal government to adopt these recommendations.
