No decision at Lubicon Lake Nation – PennWest Petroleum Ltd hearing – Peace River Record

No decision was reached after lawyers for the Lubicon Lake Nation and PennWest Petroleum Ltd. presented their submissions at a hearing on March 19 at the Court of Queen’s Bench in Peace River.
The Lubicon Lake Nation filed a lawsuit against PennWest in November of 2013, requesting an injunction and recognition of Lubicon aboriginal title and authority over their lands, citing issues about environmental violations related to fracking and oil and gas development.
PennWest brought a motion to strike the case from the courts, from the perspective that because the Alberta government issued permits to allow them to proceed with oil and gas development, they should be immune to legal action from aboriginal groups who are negatively impacted.
