NWT government releases proposed fracking regulations for territory – Northern Journal

The territorial government released its own set of proposed rules for companies wanting to hydraulically fracture, or “frack,” for shale oil or gas in the Northwest Territories last Wednesday, exactly one year after assuming authority for natural resource development through devolution.

The regulations are a first move toward creating a “made in the North” regulatory regime reflecting the priorities of Northerners and national best practices, according to officials.

“This is the first significant step that the government of the NWT has taken to put a distinctly Northern stamp on the regulatory system that we now govern,” Industry, Tourism and Investment Minister David Ramsay, who also serves as head of the NWT oil and gas regulator, told media during a press conference on Apr. 1.
