The territorial government has agreed to continue discussions with the Dehcho First Nations (DFN) regarding their land claim process this month despite DFN’s refusal to accept the GNWT’s final offer on land quantum by the set deadline of Apr. 6.
In an email sent last week, the GNWT scheduled meetings in Yellowknife from Apr. 21 to 23 in order to “assess the current status of negotiations and prospects for success, as well as options for addressing outstanding matters.”
DFN Grand Chief Herb Norwegian said he appreciates the willingness of Premier Bob McLeod and his team of negotiators to open up a dialogue.
“It’s a good gesture, a good sign that they do want to meet,” said Norwegian, who did a tour of Dehcho communities last week to bring them up to speed on the current impasse in negotiations. “The premier had said to us he would have the negotiators get back to us and he’s standing by his word, which is good.”
