Province Protects Traditional First Nations Lands In Oilsands Region – Oilsands Review

The Alberta government and Fort McKay First Nation have agreed to protect a once-disputed parcel of land in the Athabasca oilsands region.

Premier Jim Prentice, Kyle Fawcett, the Minister of Environment and Sustainable Resource Development, and Jim Boucher, chief of Fort McKay First Nation, recently signed a letter of intent to develop an access management plan for the Moose Lake area.

The Moose Lake area is culturally significant to the First Nation and Metis people of Fort McKay, so the Alberta government is taking steps to ensure this sacred land is protected for generations to come, says a government press release.
