Redford Government delivers real results in 2013

Dec 15, 2013

The Redford Government made tremendous progress in 2013 on implementing the Building Alberta Plan – our plan to build an even better quality of life for Albertans in the future.

Nearly three dozen bills were introduced and passed the Legislature in 2013 supporting the Redford Government’s Building Alberta Plan, which invests in families and communities, ensures government lives within its means and opens new markets.

“I’m so proud of what we’ve accomplished this year. In the face of the bitumen bubble and the worst flooding in Alberta’s history, we made some difficult choices, but they allowed us to keep our economy on track. We are working hard to ensure we’re building Alberta for the four million Albertans today and the million more who we’ll welcome over the next decade.”
– Alison Redford, Premier of Alberta

Highlights of 2013

  • Responded quickly to help rebuild the lives of the 100,000 Albertans impacted by June’s flooding, while, through Bill 27, the Flood Recovery and Reconstruction Act moving to protect communities and taxpayers from future flood damage;
  • Negotiated long-term deals with our teachers and doctors to ensure stability and better quality learning and care;
  • An agreement 50 years in the making to complete the Calgary ring road, while working to complete the Edmonton ring road three years ahead of schedule;
  • Building the first wave of 50 new schools and 70 school modernizations;
  • Working with 24 communities to develop Family Care Clinics;
  • Passed Bill 32, the Enhancing Safety on Alberta Roads Act, that puts families first by keeping children safe in playground zones and increasing safety on Alberta’s highways.
  • Passed Bill 46, the Public Service Salary Restraint Act, to ensure a wage agreement with government workers is fair to employees and fair to taxpayers;
  • Zero percent spending increase in Budget 2013;
  • Froze MLA salaries for a total of four years, following an 8% MLA pay cut in 2012;
  • Reached a landmark agreement with BC to move Alberta oil and gas to the BC coast, while protecting Alberta’s royalties;
  • Signed a framework agreement with China to increase energy trade – the only province to sign such an agreement; and,
  • Received endorsement from Canada’s Premiers for the Canadian Energy Strategy, to get fairer prices for our energy exports.

“I’m excited to work with the new ministerial team and our incredible PC caucus on delivering the next phase of our Building Alberta Plan, to ensure we build an even better quality of life for the people of this great province.”
– Alison Redford, Premier of Alberta

Under the Building Alberta Plan, our government is investing in families and communities, living within our means, and opening new markets for Alberta’s resources to ensure we’re able to fund the services Albertans told us matter most to them. We will continue to deliver the responsible change Albertans voted for.
