Senate Committee Goes to Nanaimo to Study the Regulation of Aquaculture in British Columbia

THE SENATE COMMITTEE ON FISHERIES AND OCEANS

OTTAWA (March 25, 2014) – Members of the Standing Senate Committee on Fisheries and Oceans will be in Nanaimo on March 26, 2014, as part of the committee’s ongoing study on the regulation of aquaculture in Canada . During public hearings, senators intend to hear from a wide range of individuals and groups representing various perspectives on matters related to the aquaculture industry in Canada.

Public hearings are official committee meetings transcribed and interpreted in both English and French. These meetings may be attended by members of the media and the general public.

“As Chair of the Senate Fisheries Committee, I am pleased the committee is exploring issues related to sustainable aquaculture,” said Senator Fabian Manning. “Building on knowledge we acquired from witnesses in Ottawa, our Nanaimo hearings will enhance and expand our understanding of the issues and concerns facing aquaculture today.”

“Earlier this year, we heard from several government representatives who helped shape our knowledge of the complexities of the aquaculture industry and its regulations,” said Senator Elizabeth Hubley, deputy chair of the committee. “I look forward to hearing from more voices from Western Canada and meeting people in Nanaimo.”

The committee began its study on the regulation of aquaculture, current challenges and future prospects for the industry in Canada on January 28, 2014. As the aquaculture sector drives economic activity in coastal communities in British Columbia, the committee hopes to hear from participants in the aquaculture industry in the province, including industry associations, First Nations and researchers, as well as other individuals or groups representing a variety of views on aquaculture . Their perspectives will provide the committee with evidence that speaks to the current strengths, challenges and opportunities of aquaculture, and help identify options for recommendations to the federal government.

Fabian Manning, Chair of the committee (Newfoundland and Labrador)
Elizabeth Hubley, Deputy Chair of the committee (Prince Edward Island)
Sandra M. Lovelace Nicholas (New Brunswick)
Thomas Johnson McInnis (Nova Scotia)
