Press Release
Ottawa (October 20, 2014) – The Standing Senate Committee on Transport and Communications is travelling to Halifax and Quebec City this week, as part of its ongoing detailed study on the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC). The committee will be holding public hearings to hear the challenges facing CBC in urban and rural communities.
“The committee will be meeting with community members to hear about their needs from the national public broadcaster,” said Senator Dennis Dawson, chair of the committee.” We hope to learn about the local markets in which the CBC currently operates, so we can make the best recommendations possible for the future of CBC and Canadians.”
“This trip is part of a comprehensive study by the committee of CBC/ Radio-Canada and its implications to taxpayers. Also, with technology and the platforms that are changing almost on a daily basis in the broadcasting industry we want to assess what is most feasible for Canadians,” said Senator Housakos, deputy chair of the committee.
The committee received an order of reference to examine the challenges faced by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation in relation to the changing environment of broadcasting and communications on December 9, 2013. Since then the committee has held 15 meetings and heard from 23 witnesses.
