The Business Email Compromise scam has already resulted in a $350,000 loss for two Indigenous organizations.
The Anishinabek Police Service is warning Indigenous businesses and organizations about an ongoing fraud that has already cost two victims a combined $350,000.
The scam, known as a Business Email Compromise, is described in the APS news release as “a sophisticated fraud in which criminals send an email message that appears to come from a known source making a legitimate request.”
A spoofed or hacked email account is used to send messages that appeared to come from legitimate suppliers, wholesalers and contractors known by the victims. The victims is then sent new payment details, according to police.
