Six Nations landfill closes hazardous waste depot – Hamilton Spectator

The Six Nations Elected Council has permanently closed its household hazardous waste depot in the aftermath of an explosive fire at the landfill in April.

In a notice being distributed to all residents on the reserve, the elected council explains that residents are being asked to safely store the waste in their homes, including left over paint, aerosol cans and chemicals, until special drop-off days.

The drop-off events will be held at the 4th Line Road landfill twice a year, in May and November. Expired medication can be taken to the Ohsweken Pharmasave and sharps to the Gane Yohs Health Centre, both at 1769 Chiefswood Rd.

For two years hazardous waste had been allowed to pile up at the site, after cuts to the landfill budget. The April 29 fire caused explosions and flaming chemical run-off, and led elected Chief Ava Hill to temporarily call a state of emergency over fear the run-off would reignite.
