There should be no doubt about it. Southend needs an airstrip. This northern community is located on an island at the south end of Reindeer Lake, some three hours north along a winding gravel road from the nearest hospital at La Ronge.
Southend is one of eight northern communities that belong to the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation in northeastern Saskatchewan. These communities are beyond the reach of STARS helicopter ambulance service and the provincial air ambulance can’t land on the privately owned short strip that is adjacent to the community.
So when the First Nation asked Ottawa to provide funds for a proper airstrip, the federal government’s response was that it would have to build it on provincial land and therefore it was not federal jurisdiction.
